This isn't the path you chose

When you are walking the unexpected path of chronic illness, it can seem like your whole life changes overnight. Whether you are dealing with chronic illness yourself, or taking care of a loved one who has been diagnosed, it can have a profound impact on your mental health.

You might feel scared about what’s happening, the unknown outcomes of the future, or find yourself struggling with anxiety about medication, or the process of treatment. Exhaustion, grief, and anger are common emotions that may contribute to the mental load you are carrying.

In the midst of it all, you grapple with a strange duality – feeling frustration with life, yet yearning to embrace it more fully.

We can help you find balance as you navigate a complex emotional terrain.

Infinity Mental Health

Why can chronic illness impact your mental health?

Physical Discomfort
Chronic illnesses are often marked by persistent physical pain or discomfort. The constant struggle with these physical symptoms can lead to distress, anxiety, and depression, negatively impacting your mental health.
Treatment Side Effects
Treatments for chronic illnesses, including chemotherapy, dialysis, or strong medications, can have significant side effects like fatigue, nausea, cognitive changes, or changes in physical appearance, all of which can lead to stress, anxiety, and discomfort.
Uncertainty About The Future
The unpredictable nature of chronic illnesses, potential health complications, and the unknown progression of the disease can cause significant anxiety and fear about the future.
Change in Lifestyle
Adapting to a new way of life, including changes in physical abilities, social activities, or career prospects, can be challenging. The sense of loss or grief associated with these changes can contribute to depression and anxiety.
Family Responsibilities
Managing the responsibilities of a family or being a caregiver to a loved one while dealing with a chronic illness can be overwhelming. This additional stress can exacerbate mental health issues.
Financial Strain
The financial burden of managing a chronic illness, including medical bills and potential loss of income due to reduced work capacity, can add to the stress and anxiety, impacting mental health.

FAQS

Questions About Chronic Illness Therapy

Will I be judged?

Our practice is a judgment-free zone. Our goal is to provide a safe and supportive space where you feel comfortable expressing your thoughts and feelings openly, including guilt and anger. We can work together to understand the sources of these feelings, and we can guide you through strategies to manage them effectively. We are here to understand and help, not to judge.

How can you understand me and my life experiences?
While we may not have walked in your shoes, our training and experience equip us to empathetically understand your challenges and feelings. By actively listening and asking thoughtful questions, we strive to comprehend your unique experiences deeply. Remember, our goal is to provide support that aligns with your individual needs and circumstances.
Can you help me learn to self-advocate?
Yes, definitely. Part of our role as therapists is to equip you with the tools and confidence you need to advocate for yourself. We can help you identify your needs, articulate them effectively, and assert your rights in various settings, be it in healthcare situations, personal relationships, or work. With your permission, we can collaborate with your other healthcare providers. This integrated approach ensures that your care is consistent and addresses all aspects of your health.
What do I do with these thoughts in my head?
Therapy is an excellent platform for addressing this very concern. We will work together to explore these thoughts, understand where they’re coming from, and how they’re impacting you. Through various therapeutic strategies, we can help you manage and reshape these thoughts to improve your mental well-being and overall quality of life.
I barely have time for myself, how can this help me?
Therapy is a time dedicated entirely to you and your wellbeing. While it might feel like an additional commitment, the benefits it can bring are substantial. It’s an opportunity to pause, reflect, and focus on your mental health. We know that living with chronic illness can be exhausting, and there may be days when you feel too tired for therapy. We can adapt our sessions to suit your energy levels and ensure you’re getting the support you need without overextending yourself.
